What is a digipak?

A Digipak is the package including front cover, back cover and inside booklet you get in CD's and DVD's. The book-style used for digipaks are usually called gatefolded paperbooks. Digipaks are usually only used for CD's but you do get the newer DVD's that include them, mostly in Blue-ray discs though. The pages of a Digipak range from 1-6 panels depending on the type of album whether its a standard one or a special edition one and it also depends on the artists and the record labels.

Usually you would only get front and back covers for DVD's and Blue-rays although you do get the odd one out and Digipaks in the past were only used in CD singles and special edition CD albums, although now they are used in all American and United Kingdom CD singles and Albums, in special edition Albums you get a couple extra pages in the Digipak and sometimes a 'free' gift or something along those lines.

Digipaks were used to replace the standard jewel cases that CD's used to come in which were simply, clear plastic cases for CD's like what you can buy in a supermarket but now you get the Digipaks with the colour of the front cover or back cover on the plastic casing around the CD and nowadays the CD's with the tracks on them have special printing on them of the album cover. The plastic containers for the CD's also now made of recyclable materials to help save the environment whereas before they were not able to be recycled.
